How Are Electricity Usage Statistics Measured?

Electricity usage statistics, 2004 - 2006, in units of mil kWh

In 2004, the electricity usage statistics was close to 3500 MkWh. In 2005, it was over 3600 MkWh while it hit close to 4000 MkWh. In 2005, these electricity usage statistics showed that close to 3.97 TWh had been purchased by the customers in the eastern part of Lithuania. The customers ranked in the category of "other consumers" consumed 1.73 TWh of electric energy in the year 2006. Further, considering the importance of electricity, its share in the global demand for energy is constantly on the rise.

As at 1990, world-wide usage statistics showed that electricity generation was 11700 TWH and the fuels for producing electricity used 36% of total global energy needs that were primary. This is more than twice their share that existed during the first half of this century. Over 50 per cent of the electricity usage happens in OECD countries. But, prospects for an increase in the demand of electricity usage in the future are in the quadrant of developing countries. In South Africa, a record 20,908 hours of power were consumed in May, according to the electricity usage Statistics department of the country.

Further, statistics also showed an alarming increase of 2.9 % in electricity usage year after year. Eskom has targeted to increase its energy capacity by 56 percent by the year 2017. A general electricity usage statistic in many countries shows the consumption of electricity in millions of kWh. Nearly, 3,717,000 millions of kWh is consumed in United States, around 2,494,000 million kWh of electricity is consumed by the people in China. In India, statistics stated that about 587,000 million kWh of electricity was used and it is in the fifth position in consumption among top 50 countries. In Russia, the electricity usage statistics reveals that, nearly 940,000 million kWh of electricity was consumed and in Germany, around 587,000 million kWh of electricity was consumed. According to United Kingdom's electricity usage statistics shows an electricity usage of nearly 345,200 million kWh in the country.

The states in US too reported on electricity usage statistics based on the total electricity consumed yearly. In Mississippi, several electricity usage statistics reveal that nearly 5.906 million kWh of electricity was consumed per $10 million of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Similarly in Alabama, around 5.811 million kWh was consumed per $9 million of GDP. Other states in US like South Carolina and West Virginia are consuming nearly 5.533 million and 5.559 million kWh per $10 million of GDP. During the year 2000, the electricity usage statistics in Indiana shows that about 4.3 million kWh of electricity was consumed per $6 million of GDP. According to the electricity usage statistics in Texas, nearly 5.88 million kWh of electricity was consumed as per $9.5 million of GDP.

In general, therefore, it would be safe to say that the general survey on electricity usage statistics reveals that about 20 states in US are consuming nearly 2.8 million kWh of electricity per $10 million of GDP. This is reported as the weighted average of all the 20 states in US.
